The London 2012 Olympics ended with a spectacular closing ceremony that included musical performances, audience participation, and the official handover to Rio de Janeiro, the host city of the 2016 Games.
British Tour de France winner and triple Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins rang the Olympic Bell to begin the ceremony, followed by a performance by One Direction. The ceremony included a montage of highlights from the Games and a farewell message from London Mayor Boris Johnson.
The Olympic flag was lowered and the Olympic flame extinguished, officially marking the end of the London 2012 Games.
