2024 to have best Northern Lights display in over a decade
The Aurora Borealis could be visible from the UK this year, according to scientists.
The Met Office has said that the solar phenomenon will be stronger in 2024 than it has been in more than 10 years.
The Met Office's AuroraWatch UK service, which offers alerts of when the aurora might be visible from the UK, is run by scientists in the Space and Planetary Physics group at Lancaster University.
The Met Office said: "2024 is going to be a bumper year for northern lights sightings in the UK. This could be the best year for UK borealis sightings in over a decade."
The Met Office added that the best time to see the aurora is typically between September and April, when the nights are longer. The aurora is most likely to be visible in the hours around midnight, when the sky is darkest.
The Met Office said that the aurora is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's atmosphere. The particles are drawn to the Earth's magnetic poles, which is why the aurora is most commonly seen in the far north and far south of the planet.
