Copenhagen's Historic Stock Exchange Ravaged by Fire

Oldest Structure in Downtown Copenhagen Destroyed

Blaze Causes Spire Collapse, Reminiscent of Notre Dame Inferno

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - A raging fire engulfed one of Copenhagen's oldest buildings on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, causing the collapse of the landmark's iconic spire onto the roof.

The blaze erupted in the early hours of the morning at the former Copenhagen Stock Exchange in the heart of the city's historic center. The building, dating back centuries, was one of Copenhagen's most recognizable landmarks.

Firefighters rushed to the scene but struggled to contain the flames as they spread rapidly through the building's wooden structure. As the inferno raged, the spire, a prominent feature of the cityscape, toppled into the roof, causing further damage.

The fire evoked memories of the devastating blaze that destroyed part of Paris's iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in 2019. The Copenhagen Stock Exchange, also known as Børsen, was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire, raising concerns about the building's structural integrity.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have caused extensive damage to the building's interior and exterior. No casualties have been reported thus far.

The fire has sent shockwaves through Copenhagen and beyond. The Copenhagen Stock Exchange has played a central role in the city's financial and cultural history for centuries. Its destruction is a profound loss for Copenhagen's heritage and a reminder of the fragility of historic landmarks.
